CONSTRUCTION OF THE REAR GARDEN
Well construction needed to take place or it would be a case of living in a junk yard which neither Pauline or myself wanted.
So the first job was to clear the rubbish this, in its self, was a task needing several skips (large metal containers for those not in the know). The first major task was to clear the old concrete, tarmac and what was a leaning Garage of Blackpool, these two areas would form the patios in the new garden. To arrive at this point we needed to dig down nearly 2 feet in depth in the main area behind the house, this was to allow for a drop in the patio so as to bring it below the damp proof course of the house (so followed many wise cracks about swimming pools etc. (especially from my late father, who I dearly miss). Once this was complete it was a case of building the patios and marking the flower borders, the next picture will show this in detail:
Early construction and first plants
The Year 2002 Early Summer and wow, what a difference and it just gets better
As can be seen by this photo the back garden is now constructed and forming into three separate areas (rooms).
- The first room is the first patio area which can be seen in the bottom part of the photo and is an area ranging from a width of about 10 feet in the bottom left corner to about 15 feet in the right hand side, with a length of 25 feet approx. A good area for those summer bar-b-cues, maybe some recipes to follow (I love my barbies and not the dolls).
- The second room is too the left hand side mid way up the photo and consists of a second patio area approximately 10-12 feet sq., placed between the shed and the greenhouse (gift from dad) and is now a great private area surrounded by Buddalja Harlequin, Lavatera (Tree Mallow), Lonicera Japonica (Honeysuckle), Polygonum baldshuanicum (Russian Vine) and Clematis. A small rockery forms to the far right against the fence and below the Russian Vine. My collection of Bonsai also takes a place in what is known as sanctuary.
- The main room of the Back garden is broke up into three main flower beds, surrounded by gravel paths and rustic furniture fitting the cottage garden (licence to create is with the author). At present and as you will see from future photos there are over 100 different species of plants in what is a small expanse of land. I will show as many of the plants, as is possible, and that I can name, in the plant lists
As you can see from the picture's below with a bit of hard work and a good planting scheme you can create a little paradise all of your own.

The back garden in its glory summer 2000

A view of the top Patio early summer 2002
You can see from the early photos on the main page, the difference in only a few years these are early 2002 and full summer 2000, that a lot of work was needed and this was only in the back garden, on future pages I will show you the finished construction of the Driveway which is now a damp woodland garden in a space no more than 6 feet wide by about 12 feet in length, and the front garden which well is the Artists licence, but it looks good with a mixture of perennials and rock plants on two separate areas.

My late Father Brian Sykes who gave me the inspiration and determination to build and finish the garden, a man I miss so much
